teaching in MYP

Teaching and being a co-teacher in myp2 is giving me an opportunity to spend maximum time with the Kids. I am enjoying it and at times its challenging too. Meeting and interacting with parents is also an experience in itself.
About the curriculum and teaching V-Arts --its all about emphasizing on thinking and skill development simultaneously. and doing all this without the kids loosing interest in the subject. Giving them freedom and also becoming strict at times.

MYP1 -- unit 1 is elements of arts
line  -- exercises - straight lines and curved lines
(at the beginning they really did not understand why were we doing this exercise and it was very important to make them aware that every exercise we do is going to help they create good art.)
After lines it was important to take the topic shapes and form where they could connect why they drew all types of lines and how it is helping them draw better shapes and form.

form -- perspective and object drawing

shape -- basic shapes

colour -- colour wheel -- tint - tone - shade - colour schemes - 2d design using colour schemes - Brainstorming for ideas

value - Value scale - pencil - grey scale and monochromatic scale, cube and sphere  in Highlight- Middle-tone and Shadow in color , black and white and color. understanding how value makes an object appear  3 dimensional.

texture -

space

MYP2 -- unit 1 is principles of arts
Balance - symmetrical balance -- and asymmetrical balance -- Visual weight.

Contrast - the difference . Can be achieved by difference in shape , size, colour, texture.

Rhythm - the visual beat created in art by repetition of an element. Creates an organised movement through fixed or random pattern.

Movement - to create the feeling of motion or action. Can be created through rhythm, repetition or movement through action.

Emphasis - making one part dominant over the other by means of contrast to create focal center. While composing if we place our subject at the focal point created by rule of third that subject gets emphasized.

Unity/ Harmony - the feeling of togetherness.

Taking the kids through the journey starting with the basics and giving them opportunity to explore and express was very important. The kids were given freedom in order to choose what they wanted to draw in a given framework which worked very well with a certain type of kids who would other wise would loose interest in Art.
I had a student who was interested in drawing only super hero's and it was important for me to not restrict him from drawing what he wanted and yet making him knowledgeable about the basic principles of art. He did well and enjoyed his classes.
Similarly initially when i had given them freedom to choose their subject of art but making them aware of the principle of art , the kids had this question mark on what should they draw.
Introducing the technique of brainstorming helped them explore and once they got into the imaginative mode they made fantastic stories and art. Through this process what I understood was it is important to make the kids enjoy what they do .
